One gets tired of the
constant trumpeting of the phrase "culture of corruption". Firstly it is
totally false and secondly there seems to a consistent overlooking by the
media of any Democratic mistakes. This is not to say that the Republican
party is not without fault. It's really about the glaring difference
between how each party handles these situations. Yes Abramoff is a
Republican and the Republican party probably benefited more. However, the
Democratic party has received over a million dollars from Abramoff. Even
the man who pressed for the investigations into "Republican corruption"
(Byron Dorgan) had received over $79,000. The Republicans regardless of
guilt have pledged to donate the dirty money to charity. The majority of
the Democrats have been mute on the whole subject. hoping it will go away?
Probably. They live in a dream world as it is. Harry Ried said it best on
Fox News. "I don't know the man, I did nothing wrong". Of course not
Harry. You are the only one who accidentally accepted the money from this
guy. The rest, especially the Republicans knew what they were
doing.. Unbeknownst to them the Democrats have a habit of giving the Republican party ideas. The Democrats very existence creates a vacuum of possibilities which the Republicans have been filling for fifteen years now and this new scandal is no different. The Democrats demand investigations into republican ties to Abramoff...publicly. Privately I'd say they are scared, as are some Republicans. However what the Left refuses to understand is that they have the most to lose and leaving themselves open to scrutiny is asking for trouble. The Democrats will obviously use corruption as a main theme during this years elections. After all they have been espousing the rights shortcomings for years. So who are we to deny them the house cleaning they so desire? That's right, the Republicans should clean house...now. Introduce law that outlaws or at the very least limits lobbying. If you are guilty of ethics violations you should be censured by the congress. If you have broken laws you should be punished. All the while saying to the media "We are tired of the culture of corruption" This could be a problem for Democrats in an election year. Getting a handle on big government would please both Democrats and Republican voters and once again the Liberals would be left holding the empty bag. The Republicans have proven that they are the party of change. They however have not proven that they are the party of controlled government...as they promised in 1994. The Main goal in the contract with America has never been realized. Now at this vital point it can become reality. And it would look as if they realized that they were in the wrong and fixed it and the left would still look like the party of negativity and defeatists. Nobody believes Republicans or Democrats are individually corrupt. The majority believe both are as bad as one another, so for the Republicans to publicly take on the subject of corruption as the Democrats insist would be a big factor because it would neutralize the argument that the right is corrupt and would render that talking point harmless on the campaign trail. That could be fatal being that the left has nothing but accusation as a platform. Give the media what they don't really want. That's what I say and watch another storyline blow up in their faces. -Bert |
