Someone brought up a
pivotal point which followed me around all day while I did the mundane
tasks that a domesticated man does during the commercials of the football
game. Roll models, or the lack there of… Where were the black role models during the “million more march” ? Which by the way missed that mark by a long shot. More on that later. Where was Bill Cosby? I single out Bill Cosby for two reasons. One I grew up listening to my dads Bill Cosby albums-hilarious. And two, Bill Cosby’s dedication to education. .Mr. Cosby Himself has a PHD in education and has always spoke of it’s importance. In recent years Mr. Cosby has spoken our against the African American status quo, and for his efforts have been both championed and condemned by the very people he is trying to help. But it is the latter that explains why Cosby was not asked to speak this weekends rally. In May of 2004 Bill Cosby spoke at a fundraiser for the NAACP. Unscripted, he spoke “These people are not parenting. They are buying things for their kids - $500 sneakers for what? And won't spend $200 for 'Hooked on Phonics.'...They're standing on the corner and they can't speak English. I can't even talk the way these people talk: Why you ain't,' Where you is'...And I blamed the kid until I heard the mother talk. And then I heard the father talk...Everybody knows it's important to speak English except these knuckleheads...You can't be a doctor with that kind of crap coming out of your mouth.” Bert says “Amen” most everyday Blacks say “Amen”. However a lot of those blacks in positions of authority scorned his criticism of the lower class blacks. Why? If there are no blacks fitting Mr. Cosby’s description then he should apologize. But there are. And why wasn’t Bill Cosby at the rally? Money for one. You see at the rally speakers would implore the crowd to give money to further the cause. Now mind you the “cause” was never fully explained except that they need to sue the federal government to get what they deserve. Now you cannot hold the black people in attendance accountable for the way they raise their children and then ask them to dig deep into their pockets. Especially for a cause that has never really been explained. Bill Cosby would have done what he always does. Hold his people accountable. That would not fit in with the message Farrakhan preaches. Farrakhan preaches that blacks are owed. Where as Cosby teaches blacks and blacks alone hold the key top their destiny and only they can reverse decades of poverty and frustration.. A decade ago I was a college student when the “Million Man March” took place. The theme of the rally was to encourage black men to take responsibility. How times have changed! Yesterday was about reparations and accusations and how we have persecuted such world philanthropists as Fidel Castro and Hugo Chavez. Anyone with an ounce of education will know that these two men represent nothing but corruption and the destruction of the human will and these are the men you want to place along side Dr. King? If Doctor King was alive he would never have attended this rally. Then again If he was alive this rally probably would not have had to take place. The final tally on the first rally was just over 804,000, and this one apparently fell well short. I wonder if the remainder of the black population was listening to old Bill Cosby records. -Bert HOME BLOG ARCHIVE |
