He looked alert, even animated at times. Eyes open wide and eager to answer questions like my grandmother used to look forward to bingo night. What we witnessed tonight in Fred Thompson’s performance is why he was all the rage before he entered the race. Smart, witty, and in command of the issues. His hard hitting style and remarks such as "“That’s not the model of the Reagan coalition, that’s the model of the Democratic Party,” are what are what his supporters have been waiting for.
One of the things that makes Thompson attractive is he never sounds scripted or as if he is giving a speech. That sort of down home, folksy delivery makes him seem real and genuine. Unfortunately it can also make him sound as dead as James Carville looks. Most every candidate talks of Ronald Reagan Conservatism. Tonight Thompson sounded like the rightful heir to the Reagan Model. No massive proclamations or promises, just simple common sense answers. And he cave them without putting anyone to sleep or falling asleep in mid sentence himself. If this is the new Fred Thompson, and no one knows for sure if it will last, the race takes on a new dynamic.
Does this change the race? Certainly. Will he win? That is an unknown. What we do know is that the race is now more about Conservative principles then before.
