HOW SAXBY GOT HIS GROOVE BACK

12/07/2008

Over the past 72 hours Senator Saxby Chambliss has become, according many pundit’s the face of the GOP. His decisive runoff win has even had some people speak of a GOP rebound. Now let’s not get too excited here folks. Rome wasn’t rebuilt in a day. Especially since Chambliss voted for the original bailout. However that may actually be part of the silver lining that is all that’s left after the November elections.

Aside from the much needed purge the GOP seems to have finally noticed where it went wrong and they seem to understand that it is their fault. Chambliss was supposed to walk through his senate campaign but when forced to defend his voting for the bailout he lost ground and his meager lead forced a runoff. It’s amazing what the fear of losing your job can do to a person.

Saxby is using his new found stature and his using it to push a return to Conservative roots.

"The basic principles that Ronald Reagan talked about in the '80s are just as important today If we return to those basic core values we can continue to be successful in future elections." And just what are these core values? According to Senator Chambliss low taxes, smaller government, gun rights and abortion. A nice tidy little message. On point and popular with the voters. Especially the part about smaller government. More important though is fiscal responsibility. Now that Saxby has wet himself in the runoff perhaps he will use his new found notoriety to lead the GOP back to it’s roots. After all that is all the rage. Getting back to Reagan Conservatism.

Chambliss is now beginning his second term as a Senator but he is by no means a newcomer to Washington having served in the house previously. Actually he was one of the “new Conservatives” in 1994. Well we know how that turned out. I don’t want Saxby as the face of the “new GOP” because he is part of the problem. However I do want him acting like the Conservative he claims to be. Aside from that I want him back in the Senate warning his Republican colleagues that the voters are on to them.
