IS JOHN McCAIN THE ONLY ELECTABLE REPUBLICAN?
06/07/2008

This cycle yes. Short of Ronald Reagan I don’t think any Republican had a shot of being nominated. Let alone winning the General election. So why John McCain? Well this is where the whole “maverick” thing comes into play. His willingness to cross the aisle and his questionable legislation (better known as liberal legislation) has succeeded in shielding him from being seen as being part of the Republican establishment. Therefore many Republicans, independents, and even Democrats feel very comfortable in voting for him.

Every election cycle there are multitudes of voters, disgruntled that their particular candidate did not win the nomination. These people threaten to vote for the opposition party simply out of spite. A sort of electoral college tantrum if you will. However once inside the curtained ballot box they more often than not buckle and vote for their parties nominee. No matter how flawed they might be. McCain is different because he isn’t scary. Democrat politicians respect him and the Democrat voter like him. Years of hanging around Joe Lieberman have not hurt either. Especially since the fringe of the party abandoned Senator Lieberman because he went with his gut and conscience on the matter of Iraq. If anything, the women vote, now known as the “rather pissed off feminine demographic” will be comfortable voting for McCain. On top of the Blue collar, and Latino vote that was in Hillary Clinton’s corner.

So the big question. What does this mean for the GOP? Well nothing at all if they do not see the gift the Democrats have given them this election. After the loss of the house and Senate, the Bill Clinton debacle, , and then a regaining of power in which they looked and acted like they were still in the minority for the past two years, they go and nominate the most liberal, most inexperienced and possibly the most racist or stupidest candidate ever. This should have been a walk in the park for the left. This should have been a true referendum on the Republican party. However those who were destined to vote for anyone as long they were not a Republican are now moving to the McCain camp. In other words this November you can vote for the Democrat or John McCain. Meanwhile three things must happen if they are going to take advantage of the situation. Firstly John McCain must pick a true Conservative to replace him in 4 years. Secondly the GOP must put together a strong “to do list” that will restore the Conservative values that defined the Republican party. To hell with the notion of “rebranding” the party. It’s not that difficult. Just get back to your roots. This brings me to the third and most important. The GOP must articulate it’s new message. And to do that they must be able to speak above the din the left broadcasts on a hourly basis. Leave alone the cries of racism, “we’re not Bush” and accusations of everything from loitering to murder. Stay on message and the people will here you. Of course these are all really big “ifs”. I have more faith In McCain than the GOP. A john McCain Presidency will at the very least Keep the party afloat and postpone the eventual sinking of the US under a Democrat Administration. However no matter how strong a Presidency he has the Democrats will take power 2012 if the GOP does not step up now.
